Meta Platforms (NASDAQ) has enhanced its misinformation tracking tool, CrowdTangle, with new safety features for the upcoming European Parliament elections. These improvements aim to address EU concerns that led to an investigation last month following Meta’s decision to phase out the tool.

Last week, the U.S. social media giant announced that candidates for the elections will receive notifications at the top of their Facebook and Instagram feeds with guidance on account protection. These notifications will direct users to resources on setting up two-factor authentication, reviewing security settings, and using the Instagram feature Hidden Words, which filters offensive message requests into a hidden folder.

On Monday, Meta built on this by launching live displays for each EU country. These displays, sorted by relevant keywords, public groups, and Instagram accounts, will facilitate real-time election monitoring for researchers, journalists, and civil society.

The European Commission welcomed this initiative, stating, “The Commission will monitor the effective roll-out of these functionalities and will continue working with Meta towards more permanent solutions that meet all its concerns as set out in the opening decision.” However, the Commission noted that “the formal proceedings against Meta remain open.”
