Amazon’s cloud computing arm, AWS, is negotiating with Italy to invest billions of euros in expanding its data center operations in the country. This initiative is part of Amazon’s strategy to strengthen its cloud services in Europe, according to four sources familiar with the matter.

The discussions about the investment’s scale and location are ongoing. One source mentioned that AWS is considering either expanding its existing site in Milan or establishing a new one.

Neither AWS nor a spokesperson for the cabinet’s office digital transition department commented on the matter. A spokesperson for Italy’s industry ministry was also unavailable for comment.

AWS launched its first cloud region in Italy in 2020, aiming to invest 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion) by 2029. Notable clients in Italy include luxury carmaker Ferrari and insurer Assicurazioni Generali, as listed on AWS’s website.

Recently, AWS announced a 15.7 billion euros investment in data centers in Spain’s northeastern Aragon region, revising a previous 10-year plan from 2021 that had allocated 2.5 billion euros for the country.

One source indicated that while AWS’s investment in Italy would be substantial, it may not match the scale of its Spanish plans. No announcement is imminent.

In Germany, AWS plans to invest 7.8 billion euros by 2040. The company is also developing infrastructure to support cloud services for telecom customers, who require significant resources. Earlier this month, Telefonica Deutschland announced it would migrate 1 million customers to AWS cloud.

Last year, AWS revealed plans to store data on servers located within the European Union to ensure data privacy for government clients and customers in highly regulated industries.

Analysts and executives note that many large corporate clients are resuming cloud computing investments after a pause last year, driven by rising interest in artificial intelligence. This resurgence is revitalizing growth in the $270 billion cloud infrastructure market.

Alphabet, which secured a landmark deal in 2020 to supply cloud services to Italy’s largest bank Intesa Sanpaolo, has invested 1 billion euros in Italy to establish two cloud regions for the bank. Similarly, Microsoft announced its first cloud region in Italy a year ago, as part of a $1.5 billion investment plan unveiled in 2020.
